Should I request a FLATBED? Some things to consider
Flatbed "towing" is generally more expensive than traditional tow truck services. The vehicles are generally larger, less fuel efficient, and can be more expensive to own and operate. If there is a reasonable alternative, simply that given the option, a tradition tow truck is usually the lesser expensive option.
HOWEVER, there are circumstances that require or may offer greater benefit than traditional towing. Below are some such instances:
One fun fact: If you are towing an older (first generation) VW Bug from the rear of the car...you'll be traveling back in time! The mechanical odometer in these cars is on the front axle and does in fact roll-back the odometer as the car is towed if the front wheels are moving backward.
FLATBED vs TRADITIONAL (or hook towing?
What about a third option?
Dolly-towing is yet a third option for moving a disabled vehicle. Dolly towing is especially attractive in some cases, due to the reduced overall cost while at the same time, providing an advantage of keeping front-wheel-drive cars' front wheels from turning while the vehicle is turned off. Since a dolly tow can usually be performed by a much less powerful vehicle than a traditional tow-truck, it should generally only be attempted by professional tow truck drivers or those very familiar with the operation and safety of this option. If dolly towing is available, it may save your wallet from losing a few greenbacks and still do the job you expect to be performed.

HOWEVER, there are circumstances that require or may offer greater benefit than traditional towing. Below are some such instances:
- Classic, Collector, or "prized possession" vehicles. Believe it or not, cars over 30 years old are generally not equipped with the same electronics that newer models have. When a newer car is turned off, it will generally disable the odometer. Older vehicles, however, are usually equipped with a mechanical odometer, which counts wheel revolutions regardless of the ignition system being on or off. Wear and tear is obviously also an issue and road debris is something that any vehicle on the road is exposed to, towed or not!
- Undriveable vehicles. If there has been frame damage impacting a vehicles ability to track in a straight line or something that has damaged the ability for the axles and wheels to turn freely, towing may not be an option and a flatbed is the solution.
- Project vehicles - vehicles that are in various states of repair or restoration may not be suitable for towing and should be flat bedded in order to maintain structural integrity.
- LONG HAUL TOWING: If you are taking a vehicle a longer distance, you may want to consider a flatbad vs a tradition tow. While a vehicles wheels, two or four, are rotating on the ground, those miles, while perhaps not logging on the odometer, still contribute to overall vehicle road-wear.
